Hundreds of people sick on board a popular Royal Caribbean cruise ship. Was there any cover up involved? What did people on the ship really think the sickness came from? Should future cruisers be worried or are passengers overreacting?

Hundreds were sick on board a Royal Caribbean cruise ship last week. The question many are asking has been: Is the cruise line being honest about the real cause of the sicknesses?

Royal Caribbean cruise ships are considered some of the most beautiful and elegant in the world. The shows, the shopping and the night life make for an incredible onboard experience that most will never forget. Unfortunately, on a trip to Haiti and Jamaica on The Independence of the Seas during the week of December 11, 2017, the majority of the ship’s population had experiences that will be memorable in other ways.

Upon boarding, thousands of people flooded the dining rooms filling their plates and their bellies. By Wednesday, the only thing full was the medical wing.

The ship departed from Fort Lauderdale late Monday afternoon with only sunshine and good times on the minds of the passengers. On the agenda was Haiti on Wednesday and Jamaica on Thursday. Over the next few days vacation goers enjoyed all you can eat buffets and gourmet dining for three meals daily with snacks in between. Being suddenly quarantined was the furthest thing from their minds. For many, that nightmare became a reality.

As early as Monday evening, several reported being sick. By Wednesday, the medical wing had turned into a madhouse. Whether child or adult, the vomiting and diarrhea was hard to escape. Biohazard bags suddenly filled the hallways and the cleaning crew was on twenty-four hour duty cleaning the ship top to bottom. The million dollar question being asked fearfully throughout the ship was “Why are people getting so sick?”

By Thursday morning the consensus among the sick and their families and/or friends was that food poisoning was the culprit. To most people it seemed to be obvious, however, it wasn’t until late Thursday, that passengers were notified about a “virus” going around. To many of the sick guests this was seemed to be smoke and mirrors.

“My boyfriend was severely sick. I have fibromyalgia and my immune system is extremely compromised. If it were a virus, I definitely would have gotten it,” one anonymous source stated while at guest services trying to negotiate a refund.

Another guest mentioned that his daughter was sick but no one else in his stateroom was. Another agreed saying “My fiance was sick and I was not but I was with her the entire time.”

The common denominator seemed to be certain foods that were consumed by multiple on the ship. After looking at the facts: people getting sick quickly, sickness being severe and uncontrollable, and symptoms seeming to last only six to forty-eight hours, it appears to be more closely aligned with food poisoning.

Sadly, the problems don’t end there. Those that were sick became quarantined in their rooms. Some said they recieved chicken, bread, water and jello while others received as little as nothing. The sick also missed out on port days, excursions and other things that were paid for without immediate refund. For those fortunate enough to stay healthy during their trip, inconvenience still availed. The child care rooms were cancelled to prevent the spread of the “norovirus.” However, if food poisoning was the real cause, all of the ships guests were inconvenienced without reason. If cruise management knew this was food poisoning yet reported otherwise, that could mean that Royal Caribbean put their own customers and crew at risk to protect their own reputation and avoid liability.

“I was sick and I know it was food poisoning! I could not go to medical because there were so many people and not enough staff or nurses to assist everyone. I couldn’t even get off the ship to see Jamaica. I wouldn’t be as upset if I didn’t feel like they were trying to cover up the fact that hundreds of people had food poisoning from eating on the ship,” Darrin Fielder, one of the passengers, mentioned.

According to another source, in total there were over six hundred sick passengers that went through medical and many more that couldn’t wait in the long line because it was extremely slow and they felt it was a lost cause.

Here are some unanswered questions:

Did the CDC get involved and rule out food poisoning?

With this being the second occurrence in such a short time period, how will Royal Caribbean prevent this in the future?

Was this a cover up or an honest mistake?

Should Royal Caribbean refund it’s passengers as a sign of good faith?
