Dan is an pharmacologist and chemist with a lifelong career in the suncare industry. His meticulous and painstaking attention to quality and detail has created the Reef Safe line, which led the way for eco-conscious sunscreen products. With the help of his wife Debbie, daughter Amanda, son Tony and a group of loyal employees Tropical Seas develops and blends a broad range of products including sunscreens, lip balm, burn relief, detangling hair conditioner, natural insect repellent, and much more. Their line includes biodegradable pet shampoos and even a non-toxic environmentally friendly mask defogger and cleaner for snorkelers and SCUBA divers. Dan is proud to have built a family business providing sunscreen products that not only help people but also protect the environment.

Dan’s love of our ocean and its inhabitants took him to Key West in the Florida Keys in the summer of 1995 for diving and snorkeling with family & friends when he noticed what he calls the “Valdez Effect” coming off them in the water. He could not believe the amount of oil slick that contaminated the waters around them. His first thought was, “This is really bad for our ocean and its inhabitants and I can help do something about it.”

After vacation, he immediately started sourcing more eco-friendly raw materials to formulate Reef Safe. To his surprise, the industry was just beginning the “green” phase and the ingredients available were not of the quality required for the new formulas. He persevered and worked in the laboratory to create the Reef Safe line.

The Tropical Seas commitment to quality required validation of their work and Dan began working with Mote Marine Laboratory to create independent eco-laboratory testing. Using Reef Safe formulas the scientists found that even at 30 times Expected Environmental Concentrations , double dosing twice daily to simulate dive/snorkel boats hitting the reefs there was less than 0.05% change to coral health at the end of 20 days. The Reef Safe formulas are proven non-toxic to coral reefs and marine life.

Today Tropical Seas, Inc. manufactures Reef Safe for a wide array of customers, including resorts, gift shops, diving and snorkeling companies in tropical climates. They have global distribution in Southeast Asia, Europe, and Mexico but one of their proudest accomplishments was providing 10.2 million bottles of sunscreen to help protect our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Tropical Seas’ commitment to the environment runs deep in the philosophy of the company. All shipping cartons are made from 100% recycled materials and their new Bio-resin bottles are made from 100% sugar cane. This renewable-sustainable bottle results in a negative carbon footprint and is recyclable.
